We want you to get the most from your visits to us, to really relax and allow yourself time. As well as ensuring that the therapy rooms are cozy and comfortable we want you to be assured that our therapy team is made up of highly skilled, qualified and experienced practitioners.
The Trust has always set high standards, and after a comprehensive recruitment procedure will only recruit therapists we believe understand the aims and objectives of the Trust and will be able to support you professionally with sensitivity and care. Just having a certificate isn’t enough.
All of our therapists belong to professional bodies relating to their particular therapy. Not only will they have completed a recognised course, they will also have to undertake yearly study to keep their professional status and maintain their insurance. Each professional body sets out a code of conduct and each therapist will work to and be accountable to these.
Any one interested in volunteering as a therapist will need to met the same high standards and go through a recuitment process.
In Hastings and Bexhill we have local awards, where people living in the area, are invited to vote for Charities and people they feel make a difference to the community. Three of the Sara Lee Trust therapists have been nominated in the ‘Carer of the Year’ category. Susan Barnard in 2006 received the runner up, Linda Morgan was the winner in 2007 and Anthea Preston also was runner up 2009. We believe these well deserved awards demonstrate how much the Charity and all the therapists and staff are valued by the people of Hastings and Bexhill.
Susan Barnard
Trained at London School of Aromatherapy and qualified in 1989 and belong to the International Federation of Aromatherapists (IFA). I have been working as a Community Therapist with the Sara Lee Trust since October 2002 providing aromatherapy. This was a fairly new post at the time and my role is to visit clients at home who are unable to access this service at our treatment rooms in St Leonards. At my first visit I like to spend some time getting to know my new client and give them time to get to know me too. During this first session we discuss what sort of treatment would be most beneficial. Most people find aromatherapy massage extremely relaxing as it promotes both physical and emotional well being at what is often a difficult time in their life. I really enjoy working in this way and getting to know other members of the family including of course any family pets! We offer this service to family members too.
Emma Chapman
Emma Chapman has over ten years experience working as a complementary therapist in Australia, with a special interest in Reflexology. She gained her qualification in Perth, Australia in 2001, she left a successful practice there and relocated to the UK in 2006. Emma is a member of and the Association of Reflexologists (AOR) and has recently joined the team at the Sara Lee Trust.
Sarah Geall
I joined the Sara Lee Trust in May 2002 as the then co-coordinator. I trained at the Tisserand Institute in London and qualified in 2003 with a Holistic Diploma in Aromatherapy, after two years study. I am a full member of the International Federation of Professional Aromatherapists (IFPA). My role is predominantly office based as I manage all aspects of the Trust pertaining to providing the therapy but I’m also involved with the day to day running of a small charity including helping to raise the profile of the Trust by giving talks to local groups. However I believe it is important that I also undertake therapy work so I do get involved in providing aromatherapy treatments and support also at the Natural Rhythms and Sanctuary Days.
Deborah Kelly
With a background in nursing, Deborah trained as a Reflexologist, Shiatsu Practitioner and is a United Kingdom Counselling and Psycotherapy (UKCP) accredited Integrative Arts Psychotherapist. She has 16 years experience in palliative care and works for the Sara Lee Trust as a complementary therapist and group facilitator for the Sanctuary Days and Natural Rhythms group. Deborah Kelly is a member of UKCP (United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy), and graduate member of the Shiatsu Society.
Linda Morgan
I have been a full time practicing therapist since I qualified in 1994 gaining credits and a Diploma from the International Examination Board and am I full member of the International Federation of Aromatherapy (IFA).
Since 1996 I have been working as a therapist for the Sara Lee Trust using Aromatherapy massage. During that time I have learnt I’ve needed to adapt treatments to suit individual needs especially for those undergoing chemotherapy and other treatments. Working at the Sara Lee Trust has stretched and developed my professional skills. All this makes working at the Sara Lee Trust incredibly rewarding and fulfilling.
Joy Oakley
I have a degree in Psychology, and a Diploma in Integrative Counselling and am a member of BACP (British Association for Counselling & Psycotherapy) and the BPS (British Psychological Society). I live in Hastings and also teach counselling at Sussex Downs College. In 1996, I began my most special and most prized work as Counsellor for the Sara Lee Centre.
Joan Pearce
I work at the Sara Lee Centre as an Aromatherapist. I qualified from The Beaumont College of Natural Medicine in 1996 and joined the Trust in late 2002. My work at the Sara Lee Centre is extremely rewarding and I enjoy being part of a close team of therapists, administration staff and volunteers. Patients describe their association with the Trust in many different ways: giving them support at a very emotional and stressful time; a helping hand, and someone they can talk to who understands and provides a sympathetic ear. They receive a wonderful feeling of goodwill and relaxation after their aromatherapy massage. We laugh a lot and sometimes even cry; the emotional contact can be intense. Our patients are amazing. They look forward to their treatments and say they feel so much better after. I have learnt that healing depends not only on treating physical symptoms but also caring for the emotional and spiritual needs of the individual.
Mia Preston
I qualified ‘too many years to remember’ ago as a clinical Aromatherapist because I was greatly interested in the way essential oils interacted with the body and could produce physical changes that were of benefit. I started my own practice which has expanded over the past few years. I now find my days are varied as I can start the day with a pregnancy massage and end it with a home visit.
I offer treatments for the Sara Lee Trust in the Rye area and am based at Rye Memorial Hospital. A beautiful treatment room is available for clients, I also work on the ward and do home visits. We are a close knot professional community at Rye Hospital with lots of integration with Doctors, Nurses, Macmillan Nurses and many more professionals. I enjoy working in this caring and supportive environment as it helps me offer the same to my clients.
Semra Speedy
I qualified as a Reflexologist in July 1998 from the Kristin Walker School of Reflexology, and became a full member of Association of Reflexologists (AOR) in 2000. I have been with The Sara Lee Trust for over 10 years, 6 years of this, as a volunteer. I find working for the Trust very fulfilling and rewarding. I feel I have grown alongside theTrust, progressing in my personal and professional path. I have taken further trainings and qualifications to enhance my practice. In the past I have given talks and demonstrations on Reflexology at NHS training days for Occupational Health. I also have a small private practice.
Yuko Nakamura
Yuko came to London from Japan in 1991; she studied Acupuncture in London at College of Chinese Medicine and gradated in 2001. Yuko joined the Trust in May 2006 treating people with cancer is one of her special interests. Acupuncture can deal with all sorts of pain and internal disharmony of the body, as well as psychological disorder. Acupuncture is also useful to deal with side effects of chemotherapy.?
