Education

One important aim of the Trust is to provide and disseminate information about complementary therapies in palliative care, to patients, carers and health professionals. The education programme focuses on three main areas:

Complementary therapy in palliative care

In association with St Michael's Hospice, study days are provided for Hospice volunteers and other health professionals to introduce the use and benefits of complementary therapies in palliative care.
The Trust was instrumental in initiating the creation of the National Association of Complementary Therapists in Hospice and Palliative care (NACTHPC), set up to bring together, support and disseminate the experience of palliative care therapists throughout the united kingdom. Further information about the Association can be found on the Help the Hospices website: www.helpthehospices.org.uk.

Patients and carers/relatives

The Drop In Centre (see home page and Sara Lee Centre) provides the opportunity for patients and their carers to learn about complementary therapy, relaxation, simple techniques such as gentle massage, nutrition and other related subjects, as well as learning from the experience of each other.
Day Retreats (Sanctuary Days)for patients and their families are held monthly please see The Sara Lee Centre.

Health Professionals

In association with St Michaels' Hospice, a self funding education programme has been organised through "Creating Spaces", set up to provide creative art study days and courses for complementary therapists and allied health professionals working in palliative care. These cover subjects such as the healing environment, therapeutic aspects of touch, caring for ourselves, living with loss change and impermanence, and the therapeutic encounter. The study days can be used as an induction programme for new therapists or as continuing professional development.
Retreats (non-religious) for health professionals are run four times a year at Marsh Farm in West Sussex.
For more information about the study days and retreats contact Deborah Kelly on 01424 813997 or creatingspaces@hotmail.com.
